2007 GREAT WOMEN OF GAMING
Proven leader
Janet Beronio
Senior Vice President and General Manager
Harrah's Rincon Resort & Casino
When Janet Beronio began her gaming career with Harrah's Casino Hotels in 1984, she served as associate general counsel, handling legal, governmental and risk management affairs for the company's gaming properties in northern Nevada. By 1994, she was named vice president and general manager of Harrah's Phoenix Ak-Chin, the company's first Indian Gaming property. In her nine years at Harrah's Ak-Chin, Beronio led the property through nine consecutive years of growth, from its grand opening to the development of a hotel on the property in 2001. In 2003, she accepted the position of senior vice president and general manager of Harrah's Rincon Resort & Casino, and oversaw the property's construction, grand opening and $168 million expansion.
The drive, desire and attention to detail Beronio has exhibited in her 23-year career at Harrah's have translated directly to her level of success. But as a leader of a team of workers, she is hesitant to take full credit for all of her career achievements. "Naturally I'm flattered, but I believe that this award is just as much a recognition of my company and my team as it is of me," Beronio says. "After all, anything I achieve is with their support."
Beronio also credits her mother with instilling the values needed to succeed. "First, she taught me that I can do whatever I want in life—a lesson I'm striving to pass along to my two daughters," she says. "She also taught me the value of patience and perseverance, two qualities that I've found are very important to success in business and in life. And finally, she taught me how to find the good and value in everyone."
Beronio says she enjoys working in the gaming industry, particularly the variety her career has provided. "With casino gaming, we're in an industry that's a combination of hospitality, restaurant and recreation," she says. "And the main purpose of our business is to ensure that our guests—and our employees—have fun. What's not to like about a business where the goal is to have fun?"
With more than two decades of success behind her, Beronio offers these words to the future leaders of the gaming industry: "Take advantage of every training opportunity that is offered to you—even if it doesn't appear to have a direct correlation with gaming. Seek out a mentor who can help guide you on the road up. And always keep the lines of communication open with your co-workers and your customers—two-way communication is critical to success in any business."
